In the summer of 1968, eleven-year-old Delphine and her two younger sisters visit their mother they barely know in California for a month. They discover that their mother, a dedicated poet and printer, is resentful of their visit and wants them to attend the local Black Panther summer day camp where men in berets carry guns and shout about black power.
