The three Gaither sisters Delphine, Vonetta, and Fern travel with their father from Brooklyn to visit their grandmother and great-grandmother in Alabama during the summer of 1969. The problem solving skills of the three sisters are put to the test when they find out all sorts of things about their heritage and the girls are given reminders about how much safer and freer it is to be in New York City.
